What
Grounding does just what the name implies. It sends any excess energy you have in your body into the earth
The term Centering is used in two ways:
·
The first means establishing a state of equilibrium between all the parts of the body, all the energy centers, and between you and the gods: equilibrium at all levels. (Another way of describing this "equilibrium" is "finding the still, silent place within".)
·
It is also the act of moving your focus of awareness into your belly, around your navel (at the Spleen center). This will establish a link to the subconscious, lizard brain, Younger Self, or whatever name you call it, preventing the person from "living in the head"; it will also provide a safe place to project energy from, it being below the Solar Plexus center where all the energy bodies are connected.
When
·
Before and after ritual
·
Any time you have excess energy, inability to focus or concentrate or feel off kilter.
·
To release any tension or anxiety that you may be holding from the events of the day.
·
Centering should always be done after grounding excess energy. This process allows you to have all you personal energy in one place and at your disposal when it becomes necessary.
Why
·
Grounding reconnects your connection to the divine, to become one with the source of ALL Doing this reaffirms your own divinity and connects you with a source of magickal energy greater than anything you could ever generate on your own.
·
Grounding provides a way to release excess energy from yourself. (Very helpful after ritual to avoid headaches or dizziness.)
·
Grounding helps activate all of the energy centres (or chakras) along the spine. Balance between the centres is necessary to prevent illness.
·
In a group situation grounding can help establish what is known as group mind: that state of mind where all members of the group think and act as one, at least for the duration of ritual, and often after.
·
Clearing and releasing of excess energy is extremely important. It’s important to do this before a magical working so that your energy will flow freely. It’s important to do after a magical working so that the excess energy that may be left in your body doesn’t cause you difficulties.
·
Without it, you may find yourself exhausted (or highly exhilarated) immediately after doing work, and then sick, headachy, dizzy, or faint afterwards. Sometimes the headache can persist for days afterwards.
·
There are many signs of excess energy. Dizziness, lack of balance, feeling giddy or disoriented. Excess energy may also be marked by hyperactivity, inability to rest or sleep after a magical working.
How
Grounding:
Physical
·
Place your hands on the ground and imagine the extra energy going into the earth, or going and sitting at the base of a tree and feeding the tree the extra energy.
·
Eating something starchy is another method -- remember how you feel after you have had a large meal (cakes and ale ceremony)
·
Another technique is to hold a piece of HAEMATITE or an item made out of LEAD. These substances too, have a natural grounding quality, and will have some effect by themselves. But to get the best effect, hold the object and imagine the excess energy draining into them from all parts of your body. When you are finished, hold the object under a stream of cold water (such as a bathroom faucet) and imagine white light pouring through the stone as the water washes it. This cleanses the stone.
·
One of the simplest ways is to put a bit of salt on the tip of your tongue, or run the tips your fingers through some salt. This will have a natural grounding effect, eliminating the excess energy.
Visualization
·
Visualize -that is to say imagine very strongly- a bright white light pouring down from above the top of your head and passing through your whole body, exiting through the soles of your feet. Release all tensions, anxieties, and stresses in your being, imagine them flowing out of you along with the white light. Let it all pour out of you. Imagine the excess energy as little bits of darkness being carried away with the light as it flows through you. When the last little bits of darkness are gone, let the light stop coming down, and let the last of it flow out of you.
·
Another version of this uses the image of water, rather than light. Some people find it easier, because the image is more familiar. So if you have difficulty using light, try this; Again, find a comfortable position. Imagine yourself lying in a river, with the water flowing through you, entering through the top of your head, and exiting through the soles of your feet. Imagine the excess energy as leaves and twigs and other detritus as might fall into a river. See the water carry these things away from you. Again, when the last is gone, you are clear.
·
Some people imagine themselves standing before a beautiful lake. They imagine themselves being very dirty. They walk into the lake, until the water completely covers their head. Then they see themselves walking back out of the water, completely clean. Other techniques visualize wind blowing through the person, to blow away the excess energy, or fire burning it away.
·
Still another technique is to imagine a long root, like the root of a tree, growing down from your root Chakra (your pelvic region, loosely speaking. You’ll learn more about Chakras in a future lesson). Visualize this root going down into the Earth. If you are in doors, see the root going down through the floor and through any lower levels of the building, then entering into the Earth. Let the root going down deep into the Earth. Now imagine your excess energy running down through this root to Mother Earth. When you are done, draw the root back up into yourself.
Centering:
·
The term 'center' refers not to the center of your physical being (your body) but to the essence or seat of your spiritual essence. Basically, it is place within you that is the seat of what makes you, *you* and the place where all your energy is directed from and to. This is very important to understand because if you consciously work with energy then you need to be able to find your center to control the energy at hand. A good example concerns grounding. There are some people who can do it naturally, but most can not. When you ground, you are opening a conduit between a source of great energy (usually the earth) and your center (which is also *you*!) for the purpose of accessing that energy for what ever it is you want to do with it.
·
To find your center, you need only become aware of it. There are several methods of doing this. One that I recomend is feeling passion about something you love, like a piece of music or (for me! astronomy!) perhaps you have a favorite object that you really love or maybe a person! Bring this image into your mind and focus on your feeling for it. Make sure you choose something possitive as negative emeotions are too distracting for this to work. You may feel physical sensations from what your feeling. That's O.K. Begin to focus inward past the emotion you have triggered to the actual source of the intence feeling. You should do this with your eyes closed. Continue to focus inward, past all thought and physical sensation, to the essence or 'base' of the emotion. When you are able to focus on your center (find it) you should feel and almost overwhelming conection with everything natural around you. You might feel as if you could reach out and touch the entire universe (and in fact you can!) or that your consciousness is expanding into some other realm! What your feeling is your own energy flowing up and around into your physical body; carressing it, directing it and bringing life!
·
Another method is to sit in a quiet place and meditate. You might use music to aid you but the over all key is, again to focus inward. The difference is that instead of concentrating on a strong emotion, you focus on something nuetral and unconscious like breathing. You should focus and concentrate on your breathing untill you loose touch with everything else. Again you will eventually reach a 'place' where your consciousness begins to expand and possibilities seem endless. This is your center. To center, make sure you are grounded, then take a few seconds to feel your own personal energy flowing through your body. After a while, your skin will probably feel tingly -- as though your whole body is about to fall asleep. Picture that energy sinking through your skin and towards your center. Each person's center is different.
·
Another way is to simply imagine your sense of self moving from wherever it normally is (often the head) to the Spleen centre. Now your movement, your thoughts and feelings come from this centre. Keep your awareness there through the entire ritual as much as possible.
