The Celts divided the year into thirteen lunar cycles (months or moons). These were linked to specific sacred trees which gave each moon its name.

Some theories have the the first day of the month of Beth beginning on the first New Moon after Yule. Other theories, based upon Robert Graves' teachings, have the Tree Months beginning on December 24th, or on the 5th day after the Winter Solstice (also called the "Hand of Yule".) The "Hand of Yule" is from December 19th to the 23rd, and the Winter Solstice always falls within that period. With the Graves calendar system, it becomes a a "solar calendar" with "lunar months", thus embodying the balance between God and Goddess.

There are thirteen months, 28 days each, for a total of 364 days. The extra day is considered a day "out of time", and is symbolic of the Day of Creation.
